Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT)

Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) is an institution of higher education in Limerick publically funded by the Government of Ireland and set up under the IoT legislation. It is one of 13 such institutes in Ireland. The Institute has five campuses spread across Limerick City, County Tipperary and County Clare in the Mid West Region of Ireland. LIT offers over 120 accredited courses from Level 6 certificates through to Level 10 (Ph.D.) across a a range of disciplines including Information Technology, Applied Sciences, Social Sciences, Electrical, Electronic and Mechanical Engineering, Business and Art & Design. LIT also cater for craft apprentices, adult and continuing education, lifelong learning (on-line, blended and part-time) programmes. There are currently 610 staff at all campuses in LIT with 50% of these being academic staff. LIT is recognized for its active learning approach, it’s applied research portfolio, social development inclusion and its enterprise development. LIT is proud of the excellent delivery of its mission and of the key role it plays in the economic development of the west of Ireland. The Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Function within LIT operates out of LITs Limerick and Tipperary campuses. LIT also has 6 enterprise hubs across the 3 counties. RDI manages LITs R&D activities and provides specific supports to enterprise and innovation in the region. Specific areas of excellence include Industry 4.0; Sustainable Energy Systems; Biotechnology, Enterprise Development and others. RDI is involved in a wide range of National and EU Funding programmes with partners in Europe, USA and Internationally. Specifically the Development Team within RDI implements a wide range of projects in partnership with academic institutes, professional organisations, local and central government, representative organisations, industry and commercial bodies. Critical areas of focus for the Development Team are Social Enterprise, Sustainable Energy and Rural Development. The work carried out within the Development Team is extensive and diverse including the facilitation of research and non-research development, participation with EU funded projects, consultancy activities in public and private sectors, and working closely with academic staff and experts in the field of design, IT and advanced technologies. RDI has been involved in a wide range of EU funded programmes (FP6, FP7, Intelligent Energy for Europe, H2020, Erasmus, Interreg etc.) and has coordinated or led a number of significant projects (FP6: BAMBOO, FP6: SERVE; IEE: QualiBuild). LIT have the capacity to assist with the a range of aspects within projects including Capacity Building, Knowledge Transfer; Dissemination and Innovation. It can utilise its extensive expertise in relation to education, training and technology transfer, and is qualified to develop, deliver and evaluate a wide range of training programmes for any project.
